Historians and genealogists are now able to access the Delaware County Daily Times from its inception until today, thanks to a project that filled in the “gap years” of 1977-1994. In 2019, Delaware County Libraries began a digitization project with Widener University Archives and the database Newspaper Archives to make those gap years, which were previously only available on microfilm, digitized for patron access.

The Delaware County Daily Times began as The Chester Times and was published under that name from 1882-1959, except for brief periods where it was known as The Chester Daily Times (1876-1881), The Chester Evening Times (1886), and The Chester Reporter (1941). The paper was renamed the Delaware County Daily Times in 1959. All of these papers are available digitally in the Daily Times Historic Archives through the Newspaper Archives database. Patrons can use these archives to discover family history and read about historical events.

“Now that the entire run of the newspaper is available digitally, library patrons can search for, save, email, and print from the digitized images from any location with internet access,” said Delaware County Libraries Reference and Outreach Coordinator Diane Arnold. “All they need is their library barcode number.”

The Delaware County Daily Times Historic Archives database can be found on the eResources page of the Delaware County Libraries website. More recent issues of the Delaware County Daily Times (from 1994-present) are available through the NewsBank database and can be accessed on that same webpage.

Delaware County Libraries is an agency of county government that provides support services for 26 independent member libraries. For information about the wide range of library services available to all county residents, visit www.delcolibraries.org.
