Youth Services Librarian

Job Summary:

Responsible for the management and coordination of all youth and family services for the library. Plans, implements and evaluates programs for children, teens and families. Orders and maintains children, teen and young adult collection. Assists with circulation and patron requests and reference. Serves as assistant to the director.


Energetic, enthusiastic person who enjoys working with youth of all ages. Library science degree and two years experience preferred. Oral and storytelling skills a must. Knowledge of children’s literature is highly desirable. Strong computer skills. Good verbal and written skills. Ability to organize and carry out programming. Must work one evening per week plus weekend rotation. Must pass background check and child abuse clearance.


Essential Functions:

  1. Organizes and presents programs directly related to and for children, teens, young adults and their families.

  2. Reaches out to local youth services agencies, schools and city government for programming needs and collaborations.

  3. Acquires, organizes and maintains materials and or equipment used in programming.

  4. Maintains a working knowledge of, builds, and arranges specialized programs for specific calendar events.

  5. Orders, maintains and weeds out youth, teen and young adult collection.

  6. Provides staff supervision and library management in the absence of the director.

  7. Provides input into library policies and guidelines.

  8. Meets with the director to maintain communication and to provide data of upcoming or resent programs.

  9. Responsible for providing DCL with all required reports for specific programs run through or by DCL.

  10. Performs circulation functions:check-out, check- in, new patron registration, patron re-registration.


Secondary Functions:

  1. Attends library staff and DCL Children’s meetings.

  2. Attends conferences and trainings for professional development that enhance youth programming and library services.

  3. Provides patron assistance in the areas of research, word processing and internet computer needs and library materials.

  4. Runs statistical reports as needed.

  5. Provides back- up assistance in cataloging when necessary.

  6. Performs other duties as designated by the director.
