Get out and Read!

Fall in Love with Reading at Rose Tree Park
Children can exercise mind and body with a stroll through Delco's StoryWalk

Delaware County Council was joined by members of Library Services and students from Rose Tree Elementary on September 26 in Rose Tree Park to launch the newest StoryWalk title, Duck on a Bike, a humorous children's story written and illustrated by David Shannon.

The story starts with a Duck who gets "a wild idea" after seeing a red bicycle. Duck climbs on the bike and was wobbly at first, but eventually gets the hang of riding. Duck rides by his barnyard friends who thought he was a bit silly to be riding a bike. After a group of kids drop their bikes off at the barn house, all the animals get on them and ride bikes, just like Duck!

Children and their parents are invited stroll along the 19 plexi-glass panel displays posted on a .25-mile circle located behind the Parks and Recreation office, and up the hill from the amphitheater. They can read each colorful page and then walk, skip or run to the next page.

The stories change quarterly. Delaware County Council and Delaware County Libraries launched the program in the fall of 2016 with The Bus for Us, written by Suzanne Bloom.

"We are thrilled to be adding a new book for the fall and hope families across the county bring their children to check out the new book and enjoy the fall season in beautiful Rose Tree Park," said Delaware County Councilman Dave White.

"Duck on a Bike is an endearing story about not being afraid to try new things no matter what others think," said Delaware County Libraries Director Catherine Bittle. "It's a great message for the kids, told through an engaging book with colorful illustrations and amusing situations!"

StoryWalk is the creation of Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vt. Delaware County's StoryWalk panels were installed at Rose Tree Park with assistance from students at Williamson College of the Trades.

StoryWalk at Rose Tree Park is free and open during park hours. The StoryWalk is geared for children ages 1 to 7.

Delaware County Libraries is an agency of county government that provides support services for 26 independent member libraries. For information about the wide range of library services available to all county residents, visit: www.delcolibraries.org.
