State Budget Endangers Student Reading Ability

The State Legislature is currently considering a budget bill that will have a devastating impact on public libraries in Delaware County. Libraries in the county could lose more than $2 million in funds and state services.

Among the loss of services will be support for the Summer Reading program. Studies show that students can lose up to one grade level in reading comprehension over the summer. Participation in a library summer reading program can stop the “summer slide.” With the budget cuts, DCLS will no longer be able to provide the prizes, promotion and programs that make summer reading fun and enjoyable for children.

If this service is important to you, please contact your state senator and state representative and urge them to fund libraries at the current level.
