Library Aide

The position is part-time, 15 hours per week, including nights and Saturdays. The Library Aide works under the supervision of the Senior Library Aide and Director. This person is responsible for charging and checking in library materials, entering patron information in the database, processing patron holds, assisting the public with locating materials in the library and with reference and technology-related questions. This individual must have computer knowledge and experience, excellent customer service skills, and the ability to function as part of the library staff team. The individual in this position is also required to interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner at all times.  

Library Aide Duties and Responsibilities include:
• Carry out basic circulation procedures, including, but not limited to: 
  o Checking items in/out to patrons 
  o Providing guest passes for computer use
  o Registering new patrons
  o Handling patron transactions, such as fines collection, hold requests, renewals, program registrations, etc  
  o Assist patrons in choosing reading material, locating information, computer and printing questions/issues, library services, library programs, etc
  o Process patron notices and bills
  o Assist patrons with scanning, faxing and copying
  o Process materials returns and holds from system libraries via county van delivery, including notification of available items to patrons
  o Maintain shelf order through book shelving and shelf reading of all sections

Other Duties:
• Answer telephones in a timely and professional manner, including proper routing of incoming phone calls
• Assist in implementation and application of library policies 
• Carry out opening and closing procedures 
• Practice safety at all times and report any safety concerns promptly 
• Participate in educational and developmental activities, such as on-the-job training, staff meetings, seminars, webinars, workshops, technology training and job-related committees
• Maintain the security of library resources
• Maintain neatness and appearance of the entire library; this could require light cleaning, rearranging furniture and tidying spaces
• Be aware of the workload balance: have courtesy and respect for co-workers in this regard to ensure that the majority of work is equitably distributed
• Ensure the front/circulation desk is always staffed
• Handle cash register and electronic payments transactions
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Library Aide and/or the Library Director

Library Aides at the Norwood Public Library may also be assigned tasks that involve ILL processing, cataloging and where proficiencies are shown or develop in other areas, may have duties assigned that utilize demonstrated abilities and talents that enhance how the library can better serve their patrons.

Education & Abilities:
High School Diploma or GED required
Previous experience working in a library setting is preferred with proficiency in the use of DCL circulation system and online public access catalog
Applicant must have general word processing/technology skills
Ability to understand and follow instructions and communicate effectively
Ability to work well with staff and patrons of all ages 
Ability to exercise mature, independent judgement and be self-motivated 
Excellent organizational and time-management skills
Maintain a professional appearance, including appropriate attire and grooming 

Schedule Requirements: 
Must be available to work days, nights, Saturdays and fill in for other employees  
Must be available to work a schedule that fulfills the staffing needs of the desk 
Must be adaptable to changing work hours 
Must be punctual and dependable
 
Physical Demands: 
Moderate physical effort is required to perform duties under typical office conditions; employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, and use hands to operate office equipment, and reach with hands and arms. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine and complex documents and use a computer. Must be able to move book trucks with 25 pounds of weight and able to lift 25 pounds. Able to stand for long periods of time 

Hours: 
15 hours per week, $10.41/hour; no benefits  
Weekdays, Weeknights, Saturdays 
Hiring and continued employment are contingent upon satisfactory passage of PA Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse History Clearance and FBI Clearances
