Library Assistant (part-time) for Francis J.
Catania Law Library
Summary:
Under the direction of the Law Librarian, the library
assistant executes some routine, clerical assignments
but also performs some work necessitating the skill
of a professional librarian. Work is performed in accordance
with standard library policies and procedures. The Library
Assistant often uses initiative and independent judgment
in carrying out prescribed duties and is responsible
for the daily operation of the library in the absence
of the Library Director.
Essential
Duties:
• Checks in mail, shelves books, advance sheets,
updates on a daily basis.
• Updates books and materials in the law library
by filing pocket parts, loose-leaf material, advance
sheets and supplements. Removes outdated material from
the shelves.
• Processes new books for placement on the shelves.
• Answers general reference questions and location
questions for library patrons in person and on the telephone.
Refers advanced questions to the Law Librarian.
• Performs clerical work necessary for the cataloging
of new or replacement library materials, by using OCLC
and in-putting cataloging data into the library’s
on-line catalog; types spine labels as required.
• Periodically shelf reads sections of the library
to insure correct placement according to the Library
of Congress cataloging system.
• Assists the librarian in the periodic reorganization
of the library, including the physical relocation of
books.
• Repairs law books if required.
• Assists patrons in the use of the public computers
and the photocopier.
• Assists in the completion of all law library
projects as required.
• Functions as a part of the Delaware County Library
System, providing research assistance to DCLS member
libraries.
• Assists DCLS with projects as time permits,
such as cataloging.
• Performs other duties, tasks and special projects
as required.
Knowledge,
Skills, and Abilities:
•
Knowledge of basic library procedures.
• Familiarity with law library terms and materials
and some legal terminology.
• Ability to plan and schedule work activities
to ensure completion of tasks in a timely manner.
• Ability to coordinate work with other staff
members as required.
• Ability to deal effectively with patrons of
the library.
• Moderate typing skills.
• Ability to lift and move books, including to
the second level of the library, if required.
• County residency required.
Education and Experience
• Completion of some college level courses in
library studies or in paralegal studies
or
• At least two years experience in a law library
or reference library setting
Accountability:
Reports to the Law Librarian.
Physical
Requirements: Normal good health. Ability to
lift and carry books/other library materials to/from
librarian’s desk and other areas of the library
(maximum of 25 lbs.) Frequent walking to the mezzanine
level of library (to retrieve/re-shelve materials).
Frequent climbing, reaching, stooping/bending to retrieve/re-shelve
books/other library materials
Conditions:
Francis J. Catania Law Library, located on the upper
level/4th floor of the Delaware County Courthouse. 8:30
AM to 4:30 PM; 20 hours a week; 35 hours per week when
the Librarian is absent or on vacation.
Compensation
$10-$12 per hour. Not eligible for county employee benefits.
